Frequently asked questions

What is IAWAI, and why has it been created?

IAWAI has been created to bring drinking water and wastewater services together under a single regional provider. This allows water services to be planned, funded and delivered more efficiently, while meeting higher standards and supporting growth across the region.

Is this privatisation of water?

No. IAWAI is publicly owned by Hamilton City and Waikato District Councils. Water remains publicly owned, and by law it cannot be run for profit.

When does IAWAI take over water supply services?

IAWAI officially launches in July 2026.

Will my water service change?

No. Your water will continue to flow as it does now. The same teams, infrastructure and standards remain in place.

Do I need to do anything right now?

No action is required, just get to know us! This is a planned transition, not a sudden change.

Who do I contact if there’s a leak or issue?

For now, you’ll continue to contact your council as usual. Over time, customer services will transition to IAWAI; we’ll keep you in the loop about these changes when they happen.
